East Side will need an investment of care and of money to restore it s exterior roof, masonry, and windows and to renovate its interior heating/cooling, electrical systems, plumbing, walls, floors, and ceilings. And that will make it available to be the home to the Education and Arts Center that is currently being planned. All of those ideas need a home. And the best place for an Education and Arts Center for Decorah is in the center of Decorah, amidst schools and churches and downtown.

In 1896 East Side was constructed with an eye to the future. Its design and integrity have served Decorah well for over 100 years.

Today the building’s future rests with you. Use the buttons at the top of the page to pledge or make a donation -- from your heart, for the future of Decorah.
The future of East Side School rests in the hands of the Decorah community. East Side can continue to serve as a resource to the community. It can continue to be the showplace the 1897 reporter imagined it would be, drawing people and tourist dollars to the Decorah economy, but it will require an investment.

The qualities that made it a valuable building for our community in the 19th and 20th centuries are the ones that will make East Side work for Decorah in the 21st century.
